In mathematics, division by zero is a term used if the denominator is zero. Such a division can be formally expressed as  “a/0”. Whether this expression can be assigned a well defined value depends upon the mathematical setting. In ordinary, or real number arithmetic, the expression has no meaning, as there is no number, which multiplied by zero, gives “a (a≠0).”
The Brahmasphutasiddhanta of Brahmagupta (598–668) is the earliest known text to treat zero as a number in its own right and to define operations involving zero.
